Automatic reinforcement:
Skinner said that hearing our mother’s speak to us whilst we are receiving reinforcement such as milk pairs the mother’s voice with reinforcement. Furthermore, he claimed that when we make a noise ourselves that sounds similar to our parent’s voices we are automatically reinforced for this, so will continue to do so.
This may help to explain why infants engage in such extensive babbling sounds. However many language-delayed children do not have a very high vocalization rate for babbling.
There have been studies done which show that pairing voices with reinforcement can increase vocal behaviour, which should help with the development of echoic behaviour and manding.
Complex verbal behaviour:
Skinner’s techniques and procedures can also help us to try to teach some of the more complex and difficult language components to master, such as joint control of words, concepts such as large and small, and under and over, and teaching chi Read more...
