Automatic reinforcement:


Skinner said that hearing our mother’s speak to us whilst we are receiving reinforcement such as milk pairs the mother’s voice with reinforcement. Furthermore, he claimed that when we make a noise ourselves that sounds similar to our parent’s voices we are automatically reinforced for this, so will continue to do so.
 
This may help to explain why infants engage in such extensive babbling sounds. However many language-delayed children do not have a very high vocalization rate for babbling.


There have been studies done which show that pairing voices with reinforcement can increase vocal behaviour, which should help with the development of echoic behaviour and manding.
