I did a VB programme 3 years ago with my little boy who was 3 at the time. I used to keep in my mind that manding comes from 'demand' and it's all about the child asking for something...this could be anything from 'Look at me, I'm riding the scooter" to 'Please can I have a biscuit'.
Tact, as I remember it is about the child labelling something - so when a 2 year old points to a car and says 'car', they are using a tact.
Does that make sense?

It is crucial to remember that the key to manding is motivation!!!!

It does make sense Sarah! I just always remember mand = demand and then I can tell the difference. Not very articulate, but it works for me! And that is a good reminder too Shelley, a mand will come from motivation, will also help to identify whether its a mand or a tact.
